Kukishinden (九鬼神伝) is a Samurai (侍) and Shinobi no Mono (忍ノ者) or Ninja (忍者) tradition founded in the 14thcentury that teaches classical martial arts (Bujutsu - 武術), classical martial strategies (Gungaku - 軍学) and classical methods of espionage (Ninjutsu - 忍術). These 3 study areas are known as Kukishinden Amatsu Heihō (九鬼神伝天津兵法), what can be translated as “The heavenly martial arts of the tradition of the 9 fierce spirits.”

There are several branches (Ryūha - 流派) of Kukishinden (九鬼神伝) each having their own specific techniques and methods. Kukishinden Amatsu Heihō (九鬼神伝天津兵法) is a branch that derived from the Izumo lineage (Izumo-ha - 出雲派), beter known as Kukishin Ryū Happō Biken no Jutsu (九鬼神流八法秘剣之術), founded by Izumo no Kanja Yoshiteru (出雲冠者義照) in the 4th year of the Shōhei (正平) era (1346 - 1370) [1349]. This school is currently headed by the 28th Sōke Hatsumi Masaaki Hisamune (宗家初見良昭寿宗).

Kukishinden (九鬼神伝) also contains the practice and study of esoteric teachings. These are mainly Buddhist teachings like Izuna no Hō (飯縄之法), Marishiten no Hō (摩利支天之法) and Shinobi Mikkyō (忍密教). These teachings includes meditation, ascetic exercises and the performance of rituals and ceremonies. These esoteric teachings are known as Kukishinden Amatsu Shugyō (九鬼神伝天津修業) what can be translated as “The heavenly pursuit for wisdom of the tradition of the 9 fierce spirits.”
